Swim Ulster is taking significant steps to expand the reach of water polo across the region, targeting venues and areas where the sport has not traditionally been played. A key objective of the current development plan, this initiative is introducing water polo to new audiences, with several successful activities held during 2024.
Over the summer, Swim Ulster ran mini water polo “taster” sessions as part of Mid Ulster District Council’s holiday schemes in Magherafelt, Dungannon, and Cookstown. Additionally, 138 children from primary schools participated in mini water polo sessions at Greenvale Leisure Centre in Magherafelt.
Building on this momentum, Swim Ulster is collaborating with Mid & East Antrim Council on another project to promote mini water polo. Recently, an “Introduction to Mini Water Polo” session was held for swimming teachers from Ballymena, Carrickfergus, and Larne Leisure Centres. This hands-on session gave swimming instructors the chance to experience water polo firsthand, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to introduce the sport to young swimmers in their programs.
The latest milestone in this initiative was a mini water polo ‘taster’ event hosted at Cookstown Leisure Centre on Friday, December 13th. This marked Cookstown Swimming Club’s debut participation in a water polo event. Judging by the cheers from the packed gallery and the excitement of young players, the event was a resounding success. A big thank you goes to Mid Ulster District Council and the staff at Cookstown Leisure Centre for their invaluable support.
The evening also featured visiting teams from Bangor Barracudas and Newry & Mourne Swimming Club, whose enthusiasm contributed to a fun-filled and highly enjoyable event for all participants.
Looking ahead to 2025, Swim Ulster remains committed to this SportNI-supported initiative, aiming to bring water polo to more venues and clubs across Mid Ulster, Mid and East Antrim, and beyond. The initiative’s long-term vision is to make water polo accessible to swimming clubs, schools, and council leisure centres throughout Ulster. With continued support, the goal is to see mini water polo become a regular feature in community sports programs.
