Swim Ulster Celebrates Aquatics Excellence at the Swim Ireland Awards 2024

On Friday, November 8th, Swim Ireland held its much-anticipated Annual Awards Night at Dunboyne Castle, Co. Meath, bringing together athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers to celebrate a year of remarkable achievements across Irish aquatics. This prestigious event saw 27 awards presented to individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond in their respective disciplines, with Swim Ulster aquatics members standing out for their impressive accomplishments.

Among the night’s top honours was the Swimmer of the Year Award, presented to Daniel Wiffen. Daniel’s season was nothing short of historic, as he earned the title of Olympic Champion in the 800m Freestyle, secured an Olympic bronze medal in the 1500m Freestyle, claimed double World Champion titles, and set a new World Record in the short course 800m Freestyle. His achievements are a testament to his dedication and the support he’s received from the entire aquatics community.

In water polo, Méabh McGurk of Diamonds Water Polo Club received the Female Water Polo Player of the Year award. Méabh played a pivotal role in her club’s Irish Senior Cup victory, marking the team’s first-ever title win. Her leadership and skill have not only inspired her teammates but also set a new benchmark for success in Irish water polo.

The Female Performance Pathway Athlete of the Year went to Grace Davison, a European Junior bronze medallist, whose hard work secured her a place on the Irish Olympic relay team. Grace’s coach, Curtis Coulter (Ards), was presented the Performance Pathway Coach of the Year award for his recent successes Grace Davison and with Ards Swimming Club.

For Para Swimming, Dearbhaile Brady received the Female Performance Pathway Award after an outstanding season that included medals at the World Series and European Championships and an impressive Paralympics debut, finishing 5thin her 50m Butterfly event.

Acknowledging the essential role of volunteerism, Swim Ireland recognised one volunteer from each province for their invaluable service, with Catherine Hanratty of South Lake Masters SC receiving the Volunteer of the Year award for Ulster. Additionally, a new accolade was introduced this year: the Outstanding Contribution to Aquatics Award. Ian Wright was among the recipients, celebrated for his unwavering commitment to Bangor Swimming Club and to advancing Irish swimming as a whole.

Finally, the President’s Award was given to Linda Stoops of Ulster, who has devoted countless years to supporting and elevating the region’s aquatics programs. Swim Ireland President Alison Honan highlighted Linda’s lasting impact, saying her efforts have been essential to the growth and success of aquatics in Ulster.

In her closing remarks, Swim Ireland CEO Sarah Keane expressed her pride in the entire community: “We are thrilled to come together to celebrate the successes of our athletes and to honour those who have helped them reach these incredible heights. It’s been an exceptional year for Irish Aquatics, and it’s fantastic to see so many of our community members here tonight to recognise this journey.
