Lough Lene, situated in County Westmeath, played host to the 2024 Swim Ireland Irish National Open Water Swimming Championships on Sunday 28th July. Congratulations to swimmers from clubs in the Ulster region who recently competed at the event in the Republic of Ireland following their attendance at a series of sessions held at Let’s Go Hydro which aligned with the Swim Ireland Regional Open Water Programme.
Swim Ireland produced a Regional and National Open Water Programme to encourage and increase participation in this discipline The pilot programme held at Let’s Go Hydro was designed to provide the following:
· Encourage pool-based club swimmers to sample the sport of open water swimming.
· Provide a basis for multiple ages to compete at open water events across multiple distances.
· Increase the number of swimmers entering competitive open water swimming events.
· Provide opportunities for new and existing swimmers to partake in more racing opportunities.
· Provide a regional step prior to National for swimmers to engage with competitive open water swimming.
