The 22-year-old from Magheralin, already holding the European Record in the 800m Freestyle, delivered a performance that was both dominant and tactically astute. His nearest competitor, Lithuania’s Danys Rapsys, clinched the silver with a time of 3:37.80, showcasing Wiffen’s commanding lead of over two seconds.
Wiffen’s race strategy was a testament to his skill and mental fortitude. Staying with the pack for the first 200 meters, he made a decisive move to take the lead, a position he maintained until the end. This tactical brilliance, coupled with his physical prowess, underscored a performance that was nothing short of extraordinary.
Post-race, a visibly elated Wiffen commented on his victory, “That race was amazing to be part of. I got to the 200 and everyone was close together and I thought I’m going to go now or never, so I just went, and it worked out. It just felt amazing, I don’t know what to say, I’m stuck for words.”
This victory is a continuation of Wiffen’s remarkable journey in swimming, following his win at the U23s in Dublin. The young swimmer’s dedication and hard work in training have clearly paid dividends, propelling him to the forefront of European swimming.
Wiffen is not resting on his laurels, as he is set to return to the pool for the heats of the 1500m Freestyle. His performance in the 400m event undoubtedly sets a high bar for his upcoming races and adds to the anticipation and excitement surrounding his future endeavors.
