Over the past two weeks, it has been great to catch up with our three Ulster medallists from the Paris Olympic Games – Daniel Wiffen, Jack McMillan, and Mona McSharry. Our athletes were welcomed home after an exhilarating Game to homecoming events hosted by their councils or clubs.
Daniel Wiffen, along with four other Olympians, were welcomed home to the South Lake Leisure Centre, followed by a civic reception hosted at the Palace Demesne in Armagh. A massive well done and thanks to the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council for their organisation of the event. With over 400 people at the event, it was a big occasion to mark the success of all athletes from this borough. Stephen Cuddy, Swim Ulster’s Chief Executive said “it has been incredibly rewarding to catch up with the Olympic medal winners from our Ulster clubs. These athletes have truly become outstanding ambassadors for Swimming in Ulster. Daniel Wiffen, with his world-class Gold and Bronze medals, has been an inspiration to us all, not just through his achievements but also in the way he has represented his community with such pride. A big well done to his local community and ABC Council for organising such a warm and well-deserved homecoming.”
In the Ards & North Down Borough, it was a homecoming to remember for Jack McMillan. Hailing from Bangor Swimming Club, the Council’s event was hosted in Conway Square in Newtownards. Alongside Rhys McClenaghan, Rachel McCann and Michael Robson, Jack took to the Square to take photos and sign autographs with the crowds who came out to welcome home the Olympians. “It was equally heartening to see Ards and North Down Council recognising their Olympians with a wonderful homecoming event. Jack McMillan’s presence, adorned with his Gold medal, was a proud moment for all” said Stephen Cuddy. Thank you to the Ards & North Down Borough Council for their organisation and delivery of this magical event.
The final celebration was dedicated to Mona McSharry who represents Marlins Swimming Club in Ballyshannon. Upon Mona’s arrival to the town of Ballyshannon, she was welcomed by all as she took to the stage, spoke of her experience in Paris, and how she hopes to have inspired the community in some way. Stephen Cuddy remarked on the occasion – “A massive well done to Marlins Swimming Club for organising an unforgettable night and to the local community for turning out in force to welcome home Mona with her historic Bronze medal—the first Olympic medal ever brought to Donegal!”.
These events have not only honoured our Olympians but have also inspired the next generation of swimmers across Ulster. Congratulations to all involved!
